iTunes + Podcasting
It was released today and I was about ready to call complete shite on it, but I changed my mind. The first thing I did was to fire up my rss feed for my TodayFM rips, and lo and behold, it's all messed up. It would only show one file, download it, but nothing would match. It said I'm listening to The Last Word, but I'm hearing Ray D'Arcy and the rest of the morning show. A bit later I would realize it was downloading whatever the last file in the rss had, but applying all the info for the most recent one. ie… it would download the file from March 1 in the morning, but tell me it was June 28 in the afternoon. And since it (the server) records two files a day, the first being the morning show and the second being the afternoon talk show, the most recent enclosure available for download in the rss file is always going to be the late afternoon talk show if you're checking it after 1pm or so. So you could imagine the frustration of trying to figure out why I was hearing the morning show during what is supposed to be a talk show.
Anyways, turned out it was my fault. When I put that together, I had no idea what the necessary fields were for the RSS file to have to make podcasting apps eat it up. Hey, in my defense podcasting was alive for about 1 month at that point, so I didn't have many places to turn to. Of course, I hit up google now and there's faq's and how-to's x 1000 out there for how to set up a podcast. Turns out I had a recordset, field or whatever in there that can only have a unique id in it, whereas mine had the same for each item. It also turns out that field wasn't necessary at all, so while most apps I guess ignored it, iTunes barfed on it by reading the info for the first file (most recent), choked on my bad line, and skipped all the way through the rest until it got to the last enclosure, which essentially closed the tree at that point and began downloading that file and as a result only showed that I had one entry in the file.
Oh well. Works now, and I really like this interface. Very slick and easy to use. I can just let the server maintain it all now and just download what I want, while still being able to browse everything in the past and download at will.
