PSP, Nostalgia and gripes on big site bloggers
So, I was browsing around yesterday at gametrailers.com checking for this excellent series write up of the Final Fantasy series to continue on with the final piece of ffxii and beyond, and I came across some vids for the upcoming remake of one of my all time favorite games, Final Fantasy Tactics for the PSP. Frankly, it blew me away. I've bought it on the Gameboy Advanced, not to mention getting it pre-release on the playstation back in the day with my connections at the time, but the gb/etc newer versions just don't compare for some reason. The lack of fluidity of the 2d sprites in a 3d world and subdued colors just didn't do it for me. But seeing these, it's become a spot on port of the original playstation game, with excellently all new animated cutscenes as opposed to real time scenes with text, some more in-depth story, more play and new classes.
Now, for me, aside from the playstation, I've pretty much always waited on consoles to have the killer app for me before buying them. Be it a new version of one of my favorites, or something completely new that blows me away. Well, I figured this new fft was going to get me to buy a PSP within the next month. That is until I saw the trailer for a game out right now called Jeanne D'Arc.
O…M…G…
I didn't even have to get 30 seconds into it before I was hitting up the local big box stores' websites to see if they had PSPs and that game in stock. It's freaking amazing. Basically take FFTactics and instead of the 2d sprites in a 3d world, make them a semi cell shaded 3d character and throw in the spell effects of games like final fantasy X. Enough said. Either you like genres like that or you don't, and I love 'em, and this was just over the top for me. 1 hour later, I had a PSP and that game.
So, I'm an owner now of the new silver slim PSP. Then I figure I'd go check out the local used place and see what they had. Wipeout Pure for $8? Here's some cash. Gimme. Thank you! Then I had the urge to go check the other used place a few blocks away, but decided this was a good start before I got out of hand. I go home and start having fun. Then I found all the insane amount of addons that have been released for pure and began downloading and installing those.
So today I continue on looking for more pure addons of stuff I may have missed and came across a horrendously stupid entry on pspfanboy.com about some band named Fluke putting out a song that sounds like it might go on a wipeout game and making a wipeout inspired video to boot that y'all should check out.
….
Seriously. It's called Atom Bomb, and it was the goddamned title song of XL/2097, let alone an anthem of the late 90's commercial and movie trailer scene. Only on the game, they cut the lyrics and did an instrumental version so you could, you know… race to it and not be all that distracted. And guess what? They made a video to promote it. It even has clips, CLIPS!!, of the game in the video so that it was promoted as well. You telling me you didn't see that in watching the video you're linking to? RTFA doesn't imply read here, but rather review damnit. So here we are, another fine example of a site with people writing to hundreds of thousands of people daily not having a clue about the history of what they're even writing about. That should be a damn prerequisite for anyone writing on any of those big sites to know their master system from their game gear. In this case, the history of a game you're waiting and already pre-reviewing the future releases of for a series that is only 10 years old.
And yes, I realize you might not be old enough in some cases to know these things or have experienced them first hand when they were around, but have some dignity and do some research before you start writing and look like a buffoon in front of the world. Crap like that really gets me going. Then again, our politicians and policy makers seem to do it all the time, so maybe I should just fall in line and then I won't seem to care about it anymore perhaps.
